Hyderabad police arrest 93 in week-long crackdown

HYDERABAD: Police in Hyderabad said they arrested 93 suspects during a week-long operation targeting a range of offences, including street crime, drug peddling, theft, gambling and the sale of gutka and mawa.

According to a police spokesperson, the crackdown was carried out from June 15 to June 21 on the directives of SSP Hyderabad Shahzaib Chachar. The operation was aimed at criminals, drug dealers, suppliers of gutka and mawa, proclaimed offenders, absconders and other violators of the law.

Police said those taken into custody included seven suspects linked to street crime, 32 accused of drug peddling, four in theft cases, one motorcycle lifter, 22 involved in the sale of gutka and mawa, 15 in gambling cases and three in other crimes. The spokesperson added that police also arrested two proclaimed offenders and seven absconders.

Items recovered during the operation included four pistols with 21 bullets, 1,995 mawa pouches, 13,015 gutka sachets and one carton of raw mawa material. Police also said they seized 263 bottles of liquor, 48 litres of illicit liquor, 1.096 kilograms of bhang and 10.214 kilograms of charas. SSP Chachar said operations against criminal elements would continue without discrimination to protect the life and property of citizens.
