JERUSALEM: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar said on Thursday he was breaking off contact with European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas over reported remarks in which she allegedly compared Israel to apartheid-era South Africa.
The latest dispute comes amid already strained ties between Israel and the EU since the Gaza conflict began in October 2023, as well as continuing concern over violence by Israeli settlers against Palestinians in the occupied West Bank.
In a post on X, Saar accused Kallas of treating Israel unfairly and referred to reports about comments allegedly made during her visit to Mexico last month. He said she had not issued any denial or clarification.
