ISLAMABAD: The federal government has announced plans to bring income earned through social media platforms, including YouTube, TikTok and Instagram, into the tax net as part of efforts to broaden the country’s revenue base.
The measure targets content creators, influencers and digital entrepreneurs generating income through online platforms, advertisements, sponsorships and other monetisation channels.
Under the proposed framework, earnings from digital content creation will be treated similarly to other taxable sources of income, with relevant tax obligations applying to individuals earning above prescribed thresholds.
Officials say the move is aimed at ensuring that rapidly growing segments of the digital economy contribute to the national tax system while creating greater documentation of online income streams.
The initiative comes as Pakistan seeks to expand its tax base and improve compliance across emerging sectors of the economy. Social media content creation has become a significant source of income for thousands of Pakistanis in recent years.
Tax experts note that many countries have already introduced similar measures requiring influencers and online creators to declare earnings from digital platforms.
Further details regarding tax rates, withholding mechanisms and implementation procedures are expected to be issued by the Federal Board of Revenue following the announcement.
