WELLINGTON: Kane Williamson has announced his retirement from international cricket, bringing to a close a New Zealand career that spanned 378 matches across formats.
Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest batters, the 35-year-old finishes as the country’s leading run-scorer in international cricket with 19,346 runs. His record includes 48 centuries and six double-centuries. Williamson had made his international debut in 2010 and had already retired from Twenty20 Internationals in November before confirming his full departure from the international game.
His retirement ends a significant chapter for New Zealand cricket, with Williamson having played a major role in the team’s progress across formats. From 2016 to 2024, he captained New Zealand during one of its most successful periods, guiding the side to two ICC World Cup finals, three semi-finals and the ICC World Test Championship title in 2021.
Williamson also leaves with several individual milestones, including New Zealand’s best batting averages in both Tests and One-day Internationals among players with substantial appearances. He has been widely respected for his composure, consistency and leadership during his time with the Blackcaps.
In his farewell remarks, Williamson said he had reflected carefully before making the decision and believed the moment was right to step away from international cricket.
“I’ve thought about it for a while, but over the last few days it’s become clear now is the right time. I’ve always felt a strong drive and hunger for international cricket, and I take pride in knowing I’ve given it my all in every match I’ve played for New Zealand," Williamson said.
