TEHRAN: Iran’s Foreign Ministry said Thursday that overnight US attacks had effectively nullified the April 8 ceasefire, and warned Washington it would be responsible for the consequences of the latest escalation.
In a statement, the ministry condemned what it described as large-scale American strikes on Iranian territory, calling them a clear breach of the UN Charter and basic principles of international law. It said the attacks violated Iran’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The ministry said the United States had, through its latest military action, rendered the April 8, 2026 ceasefire devoid of meaning. It also said the US administration would bear full responsibility for what it described as the highly dangerous fallout of intensifying tensions.
The Iranian Foreign Ministry said in its statement:
“The illegal and criminal attacks carried out by the United States in recent hours have not only constituted a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and the fundamental rules of international law regarding respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of states, but have also effectively rendered the April 8, 2026 ceasefire meaningless,”
Regional countries urged not to facilitate attacks
The ministry also criticised the use of the territory and facilities of some countries in the region by the US military to prepare and launch attacks against Iran. It said such cooperation placed those countries alongside the aggressors.
According to the statement, all states in the region have both a legal and moral duty to ensure that their land, installations and resources are not used for operations targeting Iran.
It further said Tehran remained committed to countering the sources of attacks against the country and would exercise what it called its inherent right to self-defence in response to US military action and its allies.
Call for UN action
The foreign ministry called on all UN member states to openly oppose what it described as violations of the UN Charter by the United States and Israel. It warned that silence or inaction would only deepen instability and insecurity.
It also urged the UN Security Council and its members to carry out their responsibilities for maintaining international peace and security. The ministry called on UN Secretary-General António Guterres to clearly state the facts surrounding the current developments.
Iran’s statement added that general or unclear responses in the face of what it described as obvious acts of aggression would encourage further breaches of international law.
