FAISALABAD: A suspect died after an alleged police encounter in Faisalabad, where police said six separate encounters left two alleged robbers dead and four others injured on Tuesday.
According to police, one of the incidents took place in the jurisdiction of Airport Police Station when Sub-Inspector Adnan Mughal, who heads the Sabzi Mandi police post, was returning with a suspect identified as Naveed after recovering a snatched motorcycle linked to a robbery case.
Police said that near the drain on Abbaspur Road, four armed men allegedly intercepted the police party, freed the suspect and escaped. After being informed, Airport Police Station SHO Sub-Inspector Saqib Riaz and other officers reached the area and chased the suspects.
Police claimed the suspects opened fire when they were surrounded and asked to surrender. During the exchange, Naveed was allegedly hit by bullets fired by his own accomplices. He was taken to hospital in critical condition, where he later died, police said. Authorities said Naveed was wanted in more than 32 cases and was being transported after recovery proceedings when the rescue attempt took place. Police said a case has been registered and efforts are continuing to arrest the remaining suspects. Police also said the bodies of the deceased and the injured suspects from the six encounters had been shifted to hospitals and legal formalities were being completed.
