MOSCOW: Russia’s navy carried out military exercises in the Baltic Sea that included practice in firing unguided missiles, conducting bombing runs and launching missile strikes, according to Interfax on Tuesday.

The drills took place as the US-NATO BALTOPS naval exercise was also underway in the region. BALTOPS began on June 4 and is scheduled to continue until June 20. It is described as the largest military exercise in the Baltic Sea this year, bringing together about 20 vessels from 15 countries and roughly 6,000 personnel.

According to Interfax, Russia held its exercises on June 8 and 9 in and around its Kaliningrad exclave. The operation involved around 10 military aircraft, including fighter jets and bombers, as well as two small missile ships.

Kaliningrad lies on the Baltic coast between NATO members Lithuania and Poland. The exclave has a population of around 1 million.
