Google Cloud outage in India linked to fire at third-party data centre

NEW DELHI: Google Cloud said some customers in India faced intermittent network disruption on Wednesday after a fire at a third-party data centre led to an emergency shutdown of networking equipment.

The company said the fire caused an emergency power shutdown at the facility, which isolated a local point of presence in Delhi and cut network capacity across the wider metropolitan area. Google Cloud did not say when the fire happened or whether it caused any injuries or damage to property.

According to the company’s status page, the disruption affected network traffic from Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai and nearby areas, leading to periods of elevated latency. Google Cloud also said there was no workaround available while restoration work continued, and that it was exploring additional traffic mitigation steps to reduce the impact.

Google Cloud is one of the world’s biggest cloud service providers and competes with Amazon Web Services and Microsoft Azure. Such outages can affect businesses and users by slowing applications, websites and internal company systems.
