Nursing student murdered at bus stop

DERA GHAZI KHAN: A nursing student was shot dead during an alleged abduction attempt in the Shah Sadr Din area of Dera Ghazi Khan on Monday, while the suspected attacker later died by suicide, police said.

Police and eyewitnesses said the incident took place at Adda Mian Ibrahim in Shah Sadr Din, where the student, identified as Umaima Farooq, was waiting for transport at a bus stop. Police identified the suspected attacker as Tanveer Patafi, saying he arrived at the location in a car and allegedly tried to force her into the vehicle.

Police said the student resisted, after which the suspect allegedly opened fire, inflicting fatal injuries. During the attack, a young man identified as Riaz Jarwar reportedly intervened in an effort to help her and stop the assault. Police said he was also shot and injured.

Eyewitnesses said that after firing at the student and the bystander, Tanveer Patafi shot himself in the head. He died at the scene, according to the police account.

After receiving information about the shooting, DSP Sadar Muhammad Arshad Khan Rand and SHO Shah Sadr Din Imran Khalid reached the spot along with a heavy police contingent. The police took both bodies into custody and shifted them to Teaching Hospital Dera Ghazi Khan for post-mortem examinations.

The injured man was also moved to hospital for treatment. Investigators collected forensic material from the site and began an inquiry into the circumstances of the incident, police said.

Police investigation underway

Police were examining the events that led to the shooting at the bus stop in Shah Sadr Din. The case, according to the initial account, involved an alleged attempt to abduct the student, resistance by the victim, intervention by a bystander, and the subsequent death of the suspect at the scene.

Authorities have launched an investigation after collecting evidence from the crime scene, while post-mortem examinations of the two deceased were carried out at the teaching hospital in Dera Ghazi Khan.
