ISLAMABAD: FIFA said on Thursday it will launch a new football video game, FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition, on Netflix Games on June 11, the same day the 2026 World Cup begins.
The governing body said the title will be available only to Netflix subscribers and will not carry any extra charge. The release is part of FIFA’s wider effort to deepen fan engagement through what it described as a revamped digital strategy.
The game is being developed in partnership with Netflix Games and Delphi Interactive. FIFA said it is designed as an accessible football simulation that lets users take part in the World Cup experience.
According to FIFA, players will be able to select from all 48 teams competing in the tournament and play matches across the 16 stadiums being used for the World Cup. The game will include more than 1,200 players.
FIFA said smartphones will function as controllers, allowing users to connect to a television by scanning a QR code. Up to four users will be able to play together.
The organisation said the launch reflects a broader change in its gaming approach after the end of its long-running tie-up with EA Sports. FIFA said it is now moving toward a multi-partner model intended to expand its reach across different platforms and audiences.
It also described FIFA World Cup: Launch Edition as the beginning of a longer-term project, with additional features and wider platform support planned after the initial rollout.
The 2026 World Cup will be hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, and is scheduled to kick off on June 11.
