ISLAMABAD: PlayStation used its latest State of Play presentation on Tuesday to showcase a mix of newly announced titles and updates on previously revealed games, including extended gameplay footage and release windows for several major releases.
One of the most notable reveals was God of War: Laufey, a new entry in the franchise centered on Faye, the late wife of Kratos. The broadcast also featured a violent gameplay demonstration for Marvel’s Wolverine, which is scheduled for release this autumn.
Marvel’s Wolverine and Kemuri
The Wolverine presentation gave a longer look at combat and environments, highlighting visual detail, destructible settings and a gore-heavy fighting system. The game also showed Wolverine using his trademark lunge attack to close distance on enemies, with the overall tone described as dark and visceral.
Another game featured in the showcase was Kemuri, an action title focused on yokai hunters who confront creatures from Japanese folklore and other supernatural threats. The game pairs highly stylised visuals with a cyberpunk-inspired city setting, and its combat appears fast-paced and flashy. The title is due next year.
Ace Combat 8 gets new footage
Project ACES also presented fresh footage from Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, the next instalment in the long-running arcade flight series. The trailer included more views of detailed aircraft as well as the franchise’s signature large-scale superweapons, including what was described as a land battleship.
The new game appears to retain the flight and mission style of the previous entry, Skies Unknown, while placing greater emphasis on wingmen through a more fully rendered supporting crew. A port of Ace Combat 0: The Belkan War was also announced as a pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 8, although it could not be confirmed whether that title would also be sold separately. Ace Combat 8 is expected in October.
God of War: Laufey closes the show
Sony Santa Monica closed the broadcast with a 23-minute demonstration of God of War: Laufey, which is slated for release next year. The game shifts the series away from Kratos and onto Faye as the central character.
The footage appeared to depict an afterlife for divine beings, inhabited by gods and creatures from multiple mythological traditions, including the Egyptian war goddess Sekhmet. It also introduced unusual companions for Faye, including a talking cube and a set of talking ribbons.
The demo suggested the return of the franchise’s one-take cinematic presentation style, along with combat that builds on the system introduced in 2018 but differs in feel from Kratos’s heavier fighting style. The action shown was more fluid and graceful, underlining the contrast between the two characters as warriors.
