Punjab extends ban on outdoor drone flights

LAHORE: The Punjab government has prolonged its ban on flying drones in open spaces across the province for 30 days under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure, citing security concerns.

According to a notification issued by the Punjab Home Department, the restriction will stay in place until June 24. A spokesperson for the department said the step was taken because of the prevailing security situation and the need to protect public safety, law and order, and property across Punjab.

The notification said the ban covers the operation of drones in open areas throughout the province. It added, however, that small drones may be used on a limited basis inside halls and marquees during private events and ceremonies. The spokesperson said organisers of indoor functions would be responsible for safe drone operation on their premises and for following all relevant safety protocols.

The Home Department has exempted intelligence and law enforcement agencies from the restriction, allowing them to use drones for official and operational purposes. Officials said the move was intended to guard against possible security threats during the period. The department has directed district administrations and police to strictly enforce the order and proceed against violations in line with the law.
