KARACHI: Two people were killed and seven others, including three women and a foreign national, were injured in two separate traffic accidents in the city on Sunday, according to police and rescue officials.
The first crash took place on Khayaban-e-Bahr in DHA Phase VI within the Darakhshan police station limits, where two fast-moving vehicles collided. Police said a 40-year-old man, identified as Shehzad, died at the scene, while five others were hurt.
The injured were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre through Edhi and Chhipa ambulances. They were identified as 22-year-old Bilal, 25-year-old Aini, 20-year-old Alishba, 45-year-old Maxim — a foreign national believed to be linked to the Russian Consulate — and an unidentified man aged around 35. Police said both vehicles were badly damaged in the collision.
Darakhshan SHO Rashid Ali said initial findings indicated that the vehicle carrying the consulate employee may have struck the other car. He said investigators were collecting CCTV footage to establish the exact circumstances of the accident.
Rescue officials said Shehzad worked as a driver and lived in Gizri. They said he had been transporting passengers from Khadda Market to Shahbaz Commercial when the collision occurred.
In the second incident, a van overturned and slammed into a roadside pole near the Lyari Expressway in the jurisdiction of Pak Colony police station. Police said the vehicle went out of control while trying to avoid a motorcyclist.
As a result, 25-year-old Tufail was killed on the spot, while two others — 25-year-old Junaid and 35-year-old Iftikhar — were injured and shifted to Civil Hospital for treatment.
Pak Colony SHO Faisal Gul said Tufail was driving the van. He added that the investigation was continuing and police were also trying to confirm the identities and residential details of those involved.
