Heatwave persists in Karachi, interior Sindh

KARACHI: Stronger-than-usual sea breezes swept across Karachi on Saturday, but the city continued to experience hot and humid weather, which said these conditions are likely to continue for the next three days.

The department recorded the city’s maximum temperature at 36.6°C, while the minimum temperature in the morning was 29.8°C. Humidity reached 79 per cent. Officials said the day’s maximum temperature was 0.5°C lower than the previous day, but the combination of heat and moisture kept conditions uncomfortable.

Moderate to strong southwesterly sea breezes remained active in Karachi, with wind speeds reaching 38 kilometres per hour, or 21 knots. Sea breezes are expected to stay active in the coming days, with maximum temperatures likely to remain between 35°C and 37°C.

Officials also warned that humidity could climb to around 80 per cent in the morning and 70 per cent in the evening, pushing the feels-like temperature well above the actual reading even if the mercury does not rise sharply.

Severe conditions in interior Sindh

While Karachi remains under hot and humid conditions, a severe heatwave continues to affect several districts in rural Sindh. The highest temperature cited was 47°C in Shaheed Benazirabad.

Temperatures in Qambar Shahdadkot, Jacobabad, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad and Naushahro Feroze are expected to range between 47°C and 50°C in the coming days.

In Tharparkar, Badin, Hyderabad, Matiari, Tando Muhammad Khan, Umerkot, Mirpurkhas, Jamshoro and Sanghar, temperatures are forecast to remain between 44°C and 47°C, indicating that a large part of the province will stay under intense heat.

Dust storm and rain possibility

Weather experts said the ongoing heat, combined with the effect of western weather systems over northern parts of the country, may also trigger unstable conditions in some areas of Sindh. Isolated parts of Qambar Shahdadkot, Dadu, Mirpurkhas and Tharparkar may receive dust storms along with light to moderate rain and thunder on June 1.

The forecast indicates that even as some districts may see brief weather activity, high temperatures are expected to remain the dominant pattern across Karachi and much of interior Sindh over the next several days.
