Karachi museum project launched at Beach View Park

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Saturday held the groundbreaking ceremony for the Karachi Museum of History at Beach View Park through its Culture, Tourism, Antiquities and Archives Department in collaboration with the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation and The Citizens Archive of Pakistan.

The planned museum is being developed as a digitally interactive cultural institution intended to preserve and present the history and heritage of Sindh as well as the Pakistan independence movement. According to the details shared at the ceremony, the project will use storytelling, archival material, technology and immersive exhibitions to document and display this history.

The event was attended by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Chief Secretary Syed Asif Hyder Shah, Culture Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah, Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab and CAP Patron-in-Chief Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, along with members of civil society and the business community.

Officials outline museum’s purpose

Speaking at the ceremony, the chief minister said Karachi was not only the country’s economic centre but also a living record of shared memory, diversity and resilience. He said the museum would contribute to preserving the city’s legacy for coming generations.

Culture Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah said the initiative reflected the provincial government’s commitment to safeguarding and promoting Sindh’s cultural heritage through public institutions designed to be accessible.

Mayor Murtaza Wahab described Karachi as one of the world’s great cities and said the museum would emerge as a major civic institution representing the city’s varied communities and histories.

Collaborative cultural initiative

The project brings together the Sindh government, the KMC and The Citizens Archive of Pakistan in what officials presented as a joint effort to create a public space focused on history and heritage. The museum is intended to serve as a platform where visitors can engage with the story of Sindh and the wider independence movement through modern exhibition methods.

The ceremony also underscored the role of public-private and institutional collaboration in cultural preservation. With senior provincial officials, municipal leadership and representatives from civil society in attendance, the launch marked the formal start of work on a museum that authorities say will document Karachi’s place within the broader historical and cultural landscape of Sindh and Pakistan.

The announcement places the proposed museum within a wider effort to make heritage more accessible to the public through technology-driven displays and archival preservation. Officials at the event presented it as a landmark initiative aimed at creating a dedicated institution for the city’s historical narrative.
