Muhammad Hanif Abbasi met railway unions in Lahore, pledging transparency and accountability while ordering authorities to resolve long-pending employee issues. He also announced plans to improve railway schools and hospitals and repair dilapidated residential quarters.

LAHORE: Federal Minister for Railways Muhammad Hanif Abbasi on Saturday assured transparency, accountability and employee welfare reforms during meetings with delegations of railway employees’ unions, while directing authorities to immediately address long-pending workers’ issues.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Pakistan Railways said that Union representatives praised the minister’s performance and reform initiatives, crediting him for facilitating the promotion of around 40,000 railway employees and improving the institution’s administrative functioning.
Speaking on the occasion, Hanif Abbasi said the progress of Pakistan Railways depended on strengthening the institution and rewarding hardworking officers and labourers alike.
“Both efficient officers and dedicated workers deserve appreciation,” the minister said, adding that any corruption or negligence by officials would be the responsibility of the relevant departmental heads.
He said he had always found railway workers committed and hardworking, stressing that no decisions would be taken behind closed doors and that transparency would remain the government’s top priority.
The minister also revealed that efforts were underway, with the support of the private sector, to improve railway schools and hospitals.
In a major relief measure for employees, Abbasi directed officials to immediately prepare estimates for the repair of roofs of dilapidated railway residential quarters and ordered prompt implementation of the unions’ genuine demands.
