ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Maritime Affairs Muhammad Junaid Anwar Chaudhry chaired a meeting to review the preparedness of Pakistan’s ports in light of the changing regional environment and discuss measures aimed at strengthening their role as a leading regional transit and transshipment hub.
According to a press release issued on Wednesday, the meeting was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives of shipping lines and terminal operators. The session focused on ensuring uninterrupted maritime trade, improving operational performance, strengthening feeder connectivity and simplifying business procedures.
Participants also examined regulatory issues, digitisation, coordination among stakeholders and prospects for drawing regional cargo. The discussions placed particular emphasis on promoting Karachi as a dependable maritime gateway.
Focus on coordination and capacity
During the meeting, Chaudhry said the government was taking practical steps to develop Pakistani ports into an important regional transshipment centre through a coordinated approach involving all stakeholders.
The minister underlined the need to increase port capacity, strengthen logistics systems and encourage feeder services in order to meet rising trade requirements.
The review was held as authorities assessed how ports could respond effectively to evolving regional conditions while also improving their competitiveness. The meeting brought together public and private sector participants linked to maritime trade operations, with the stated objective of supporting smoother cargo movement and more efficient port handling.
Officials and industry representatives discussed ways to make port-related processes more streamlined, while also considering how digital tools and closer institutional coordination could help address operational and regulatory bottlenecks. The meeting also looked at opportunities to position Pakistan’s ports more effectively in the regional shipping landscape.
Karachi remained central to the discussion, with participants highlighting its importance as a maritime gateway and considering steps to enhance its reliability for regional trade flows. The deliberations also covered feeder connectivity, which was identified as an important component in improving access and supporting broader transshipment ambitions.
The press release said the meeting was part of efforts to assess current readiness and formulate strategies for improving the standing of Pakistan’s harbours in regional maritime trade. The government’s stated priorities included seamless trade operations, stronger logistics linkages and greater efficiency across port functions.
