Balochistan Assembly extends Safe City ordinance by 90 days

QUETTA: The Balochistan Assembly on Saturday adopted a resolution extending the Balochistan Safe City Authority Ordinance 2026 for another 90 days.

The move came after Parliamentary Secretary for Law and Parliamentary Affairs Nawabzada Zarain Magsi tabled a motion seeking suspension of procedural requirements under Rule 103(2) for the presentation of constitutional resolutions under Article 128(2). The House approved the motion, allowing the resolution to be taken up.

Parliamentary Secretary for Information Technology Samad Gorgaj then presented the constitutional resolution before the assembly. He told the House that the ordinance had originally been promulgated by the governor on February 10, 2026, during a recess of the legislature.

According to Mr Gorgaj, the ordinance was introduced to help maintain law and order, strengthen efforts aimed at preventing crime, protect citizens and improve the capacity of law enforcement agencies.

He informed the assembly that the ordinance was set to expire on May 9, 2026, and said its continuation was necessary in the interest of public safety.

The resolution was passed unanimously by the House.

Procedure and purpose

The assembly first cleared the way for the constitutional resolution by agreeing to the motion moved by Nawabzada Zarain Magsi. The step enabled the House to proceed under the relevant constitutional provision for extending the ordinance.

Samad Gorgaj, while moving the resolution, outlined the stated objectives of the Balochistan Safe City Authority Ordinance 2026. He said the law was intended to support public order, reinforce crime control measures, ensure the protection of residents and strengthen law enforcement capability in the province.

He also pointed out that the ordinance had been issued by the governor while the assembly was not in session and that its legal term was ending on May 9.

With the assembly’s approval, the ordinance has now been extended for a further 90 days.

Unanimous approval

The resolution received unanimous backing from the members present in the House, according to the proceedings reported from the assembly.

The extension means the ordinance will remain in force beyond its original expiry date after lawmakers agreed that its continuation was required for maintaining public safety.
