KARACHI: Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre hosted a fire safety and disaster preparedness workshop in Karachi, where citizens, healthcare workers and representatives of different institutions were given practical training in emergency response and fire prevention.
The programme also featured a live disaster drill. Experts from Rescue 1122 demonstrated the procedures to be followed in the event of a fire, including evacuation methods, immediate response steps and the safe use of fire extinguishers during emergencies.
Participants were trained to deal with a range of situations, including electrical fires, gas cylinder explosions and other emergency scenarios. Officials said quick evacuation and timely alerts are essential to reducing the risk of loss of life and property.
Emergency response training
The workshop focused on improving awareness and preparedness among both the public and institutional participants. Through hands-on instruction, attendees were shown how to respond during fire-related incidents and how to follow safety measures aimed at preventing such emergencies from escalating.
According to the details shared at the event, the training was designed to help participants better understand how to act in the first moments of a fire outbreak, when rapid decisions can be critical. Rescue 1122 personnel led the practical demonstrations and explained the steps required for safe evacuation and emergency handling.
Officials stress wider awareness
Mayor Murtaza Wahab said following safety rules, whether related to traffic or fire prevention, can play a major role in lowering the number of accidents. He said similar awareness sessions should also be organised in universities and colleges across Karachi so that people can develop an understanding of safety measures at an early stage.
JPMC Executive Director Prof Dr Khalid Shah also highlighted the importance of such initiatives, saying workshops of this kind are important for reinforcing the healthcare system.
The event brought together members of the public, medical personnel and institutional representatives for training intended to strengthen preparedness for fire incidents and other emergencies. The live drill and practical demonstrations formed a central part of the awareness effort at the hospital.
