Karachi braces for continued heat spell

KARACHI: Daytime temperatures are expected to stay elevated in Karachi over the next few days, although heatwave conditions are not forecast for the city, according to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD).

The department said a heatwave has started affecting central and upper districts of Sindh and is likely to continue until May 3. It issued a heatwave alert for several districts, including Jamshoro, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Kashmore, Ghotki, Sanghar, Khairpur, Naushahro Feroze, Jacobabad, Larkana and Sukkur.

According to the PMD, daytime temperatures in these areas are expected to remain 4 to 6°C above normal between April 28 and May 3. The department advised residents, particularly women, children and elderly people, to take precautionary measures, avoid unnecessary exposure to direct sunlight during peak hours and increase water intake.

Karachi weather outlook

The PMD said Karachi is likely to experience hot weather through Thursday, with temperatures possibly rising above 36°C. Humidity levels may climb to 60%, which could make conditions feel hotter than the recorded temperature.

Despite the warm and humid conditions, the department said no heatwave is currently expected in the metropolis.

On Tuesday, Karachi recorded a maximum temperature of 34.7°C, while humidity was measured at 58%.

Temperatures in interior Sindh

In interior Sindh, Mohenjo-daro recorded the highest temperature at 44°C, according to the department's data.

Other cities also reported very high temperatures. Larkana recorded 42.5°C, while Jacobabad, Dadu and Hyderabad each registered 42°C. Shaheed Benazirabad, Sukkur, Paddidan, Rohri and Hyderabad Airport recorded 41°C.

The PMD also said Chhor, Mithi and Sakrand were among the locations where temperatures crossed 40°C.

The latest advisory comes as hot weather persists across Sindh, with central and upper parts of the province facing more severe conditions than Karachi. The department's alert covers the period up to May 3 and urges vulnerable groups to remain cautious during the hottest part of the day.

Officials have advised the public in the affected districts to stay hydrated and limit time outdoors where possible, especially during peak sunlight hours, as temperatures remain significantly above seasonal norms.
