LODHRAN: A man surrendered to police after allegedly killing his wife following a domestic dispute in Lodhran, police said on Monday.
According to police, the suspect allegedly slit his wife's throat with a knife after an argument. He later called the police emergency helpline 15, informed officials about the incident and remained at the scene, where he surrendered when police arrived.
The victim was identified as Maryam. Police shifted her body to hospital for a post-mortem examination and said legal proceedings had been initiated.
Details shared by relatives
According to initial details shared by relatives of the accused, Maryam was a resident of Haroonabad and had previously been married. They said she had four children from her first marriage and, after obtaining a divorce, had married Osama, a resident of Lodhran, around one month ago in what they described as a love marriage.
Relatives said the accused worked in Jhelum and had recently returned to Lodhran. They added that Maryam had gone to her parents' home in Haroonabad along with her children.
According to the relatives, Osama later went to Haroonabad to bring his wife back, but a dispute took place there between him and his in-laws, after which he returned to Lodhran. They further said the in-laws subsequently approached police in Haroonabad, while Maryam returned to Lodhran with her children on Sunday, where tensions between the couple reportedly resurfaced.
Incident and police response
On Monday morning, another altercation took place between the husband and wife. Family members said the woman had gone out to fetch fodder for animals when the incident occurred.
They said that when she returned, her son allegedly told her that he had killed her mother with a knife. The accused then contacted the 15 helpline and informed police before surrendering upon their arrival.
After receiving information about the incident, Acting DPO Rana Muhammad Razaq, DSP Saddar Circle Abid Hussain Bhalla and SHO Saddar Lodhran Aamir Nadeem reached the scene.
Police said further legal action was under way.
