Sindh declares public holiday on May 1 for Labour Day
The Sindh government has declared May 1 a public holiday on the occasion of Labour Day. Government offices, public bodies and educational institutions will remain closed, except essential services.

KARACHI: The Sindh government on Thursday announced a public holiday on May 1, which falls on Friday, in connection with Labour Day.
According to a notification issued by the provincial government, the holiday will apply to all government offices, as well as autonomous and semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils working under the administrative control of the Sindh government. The notification said essential services would remain exempt from the holiday.
The provincial government has also said that educational institutions across Sindh will remain closed on the occasion. This includes schools, colleges and universities.
Labour Day, also referred to as May Day, is observed around the world every year on May 1. The day is marked to show solidarity with labourers and to recognise the rights of the working class.
The observance is also aimed at promoting measures for the protection of labourers and industrial workers from exploitation and to support safeguards related to their employment.
Holiday to cover public sector institutions
Under the notification, the public holiday will extend across a wide range of provincial institutions under Sindh’s administrative control. These include government departments, autonomous organisations, semi-autonomous bodies, corporations and local councils.
However, the exemption for essential services means that departments considered necessary for uninterrupted public functioning will continue to operate despite the holiday.
Educational institutions to remain closed
The announcement also covers the education sector, with schools, colleges and universities set to remain shut in observance of Labour Day.
The closure of educational institutions is part of the broader provincial holiday notification issued by the Sindh government on Thursday.
Labour Day is annually observed as a day linked to workers’ rights and welfare. The occasion highlights solidarity with labourers and underscores the importance of protecting workers, particularly labourers and industrial employees, against exploitation.
The Sindh government’s announcement sets out the official observance of the day across the province’s public sector institutions and educational establishments, while maintaining operations for essential services.
