Police firing in Nizampur kills youth, triggers protest

NOWSHERA: A young man was killed and another was critically wounded after alleged firing by police personnel at Sabirabad Police Post in the Nizampur area, according to police, in an incident that led to public protest and prompted immediate action by district authorities.

Police said District Police Officer Ahmad Shah ordered the registration of a case without delay after the shooting.

According to the police account cited in the report, Assistant Sub-Inspector Yaqoob Khan, post clerk Alam Sher and constable Basharat were taken into custody following the incident. Police also seized the official weapons allegedly used in the firing.

The incident took place on Tuesday evening. Hafeez, son of Muhammad Nadeem and a resident of Darwazgai, Nizampur, was travelling in a car bearing registration number AGL-055 along with his companion Ubaidullah, son of Gul Muhammad, when they reached Sabirabad Police Post.

At that point, the officials stationed at the post allegedly opened fire on the vehicle.

As a result of the firing, Hafeez was killed, while Ubaidullah sustained critical injuries. The incident drew a swift response from the district administration and also sparked a protest by members of the public.

Case registered after DPO orders action

Police said the district police chief moved quickly after the incident by directing that a case be registered. The three police personnel identified in the report — ASI Yaqoob Khan, clerk Alam Sher and constable Basharat — were subsequently arrested.

The official firearms said to have been used in the shooting were also taken into custody as part of the action taken after the incident, according to police.

Incident sparks public reaction

The killing and injury triggered a protest in the area, reflecting public anger over the alleged police firing.

Police identified the deceased as Hafeez, son of Muhammad Nadeem, from Darwazgai in Nizampur. The injured man was identified as Ubaidullah, son of Gul Muhammad, who was reported to be in critical condition.

Authorities have already initiated legal action in connection with the incident, according to police, following orders issued by DPO Ahmad Shah.

The case centres on the alleged firing by personnel posted at Sabirabad Police Post in Nizampur on Tuesday evening, which police said left one man dead and another critically injured.
