DUBAI: Dubai has unveiled a major expansion of its metro system, announcing a new route called the Golden Line with an estimated cost of 34 billion dirhams, or $9.25 billion, and a target completion date of September 9, 2032.

Details of the project were shared by Dubai ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on social media, according to the announcement. The planned line will run around 40 metres below ground and is set to link 15 important areas across the emirate.

The new metro corridor is expected to serve about 1.5 million people. Authorities also said it would support 55 major real estate projects that are currently under construction.

Dubai said the Golden Line would increase the overall length of the emirate’s metro network by 35%. The project forms part of wider efforts to strengthen transport infrastructure as the city responds to population growth and continued urban expansion.

Network expansion plan

The announcement marks another significant investment in public transport in Dubai, where authorities have been expanding infrastructure to meet rising demand linked to development and demographic growth.

According to the details released, the Golden Line is designed to improve connectivity between key parts of the emirate while also supporting large-scale property developments already underway. The underground alignment, at a depth of about 40 metres, is intended to connect 15 major districts.

The government said the project would play a role in accommodating the needs of a growing population, with an expected service reach of around 1.5 million people. It also linked the metro expansion to 55 major real estate developments now being built.

Dubai authorities further said the addition of the Golden Line would extend the total metro network by 35%. The project was presented as part of a broader strategy to improve mobility across the emirate and keep pace with urban growth.

Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum shared the project details on social media, outlining the scale of the planned route and its expected contribution to the city’s transport system. The Golden Line is set to become one of the emirate’s major infrastructure projects over the coming years.
