Iran restricts Hormuz traffic again as US blockade remains in place

Global energy markets faced renewed uncertainty on Saturday as Iran again restricted traffic through the Strait of Hormuz after the United States did not lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports.

Earlier in the day, a convoy of oil tankers had crossed the waterway after Tehran announced that commercial shipping had resumed following seven weeks of disruption. Later, Iran said the strait had “returned to its previous state” as pressure on its ports continued.

US President Donald Trump warned that Washington could walk away from the current ceasefire if a long-term agreement is not reached before the truce expires on Wednesday. He said there would be no extension without a comprehensive deal.

The developments triggered volatility in global oil markets. Prices fell below $80 per barrel after the initial reopening but rebounded above $85 following Iran’s latest move.

The Strait of Hormuz remains central to negotiations, as it handles a significant share of global oil shipments. Iran’s control over the route has emerged as a key factor in ongoing talks, with uncertainty likely to persist if the situation remains unresolved.
