Confusion surrounds release of grade 8 results

LAHORE: More than one million Grade 8 students in Punjab are still waiting for their final annual examination results, even though the new academic session began two weeks ago, according to details.

As per the reported details, this is the first time in Punjab’s history that such a large number of Grade 8 students who appeared in both board and school examinations have not yet received their combined final result after the start of the new session.

This year, the examination process was split between board-assessed and school-assessed subjects. The Punjab Education Curriculum Assessment and Training Authority (PECTAA) conducted board examinations in four subjects: Urdu, English, Mathematics, and Science. The remaining six subjects were examined at the school level.

PECTAA has already issued the results for the four subjects under its supervision. It declared that 88% of students passed, while 12 per cent failed. However, the overall final result, which is to combine the board examination outcome with the school-based assessment, has not yet been announced.

The delay has created uncertainty for students seeking promotion to Grade 9. Teachers’ associations said they have not received clear instructions from the authorities regarding the criteria that will be used for the final result.

Schools told not to upload results

According to the reported details, schools have already prepared their own results, using a minimum passing threshold of 33 per cent in all subjects. Despite this, education officials have directed schools not to upload results or proceed with student promotions until formal guidelines are issued.

The situation has led to concern among students and parents, who say the delay is affecting academic planning and creating confusion about the next stage of schooling.

Students called for the immediate announcement of the results so they could plan ahead for their studies.

The pending result has left schools, teachers, students, and parents waiting for a final decision on how the combined marks from board and school examinations will be calculated for promotion purposes.

As per details, the issue centres not on the board result itself, which has already been released by PECTAA, but on the absence of a final consolidated outcome covering all 10 subjects. Until that result is issued and the relevant criteria are communicated, the promotion of Grade 8 students to Grade 9 remains on hold.

The delay comes at a time when the academic year has already moved forward, adding to the uncertainty faced by families across the province.
