LAHORE: The Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) has expressed concern over the health of its jailed leader Ejaz Chaudhry, currently imprisoned at Kot Lakhpat Jail, saying his medical condition has worsened and demanding urgent treatment.
In a statement, the party’s central information wing said Chaudhry’s kidney condition had progressed to stage three, according to recent medical examinations, and claimed that doctors had advised his treatment could not be adequately managed within the jail.
The PTI described the situation as a result of “negligence” by the authorities and called for immediate medical care, as well as timely hearings in what it termed cases involving “political prisoners”.
It also urged state institutions to ensure that inmates in Kot Lakhpat Jail receive appropriate healthcare, warning that delays could endanger lives.
Reports about Chaudhry’s health had recently circulated on social media, including images appearing to show him in a hospital setting. However, his son, Advocate Ali Chaudhry, clarified that he had not been moved to hospital and remained in custody.
Speaking to Dawn, Chaudhry’s counsel Rana Mudassar Umer said the former senator’s health had deteriorated due to what he described as delays in treatment.
He said Chaudhry had previously undergone cardiac procedures in custody and later developed kidney complications, followed by a gallbladder infection. He added that in some instances he was returned to jail from hospital despite medical advice for continued treatment.
The lawyer said fresh medical reports, obtained after repeated court interventions, indicated stage three kidney disease and required specialised care outside prison facilities.
He added that despite a recent court order, proper treatment arrangements had yet to begin.
Chaudhry, a former senator, was convicted in connection with the May 9, 2023 riots and is serving a 10-year sentence. He has previously been admitted to the Punjab Institute of Cardiology and the Punjab Kidney and Liver Institute for treatment of cardiac and kidney-related ailments.
