PHA plants 150,000 petunias as Faisalabad launches spring greening drive

FAISALABAD: Despite rising inflation, a slowdown in business activity, and increasing petroleum prices, residents of Faisalabad are witnessing a visible transformation in the city’s landscape as large-scale greening efforts take shape.

The Faisalabad Horticulture Agency (PHA) has launched an extensive plantation and beautification campaign, developing green belts and flower beds across major intersections, markets, roads, and public squares to mark the arrival of spring.

According to Ghulam Kibria, Director of Horticulture and Marketing, the initiative has primarily focused on seasonal flowering plants, with around 150,000 petunia plants introduced across key areas of the city. He said Civil Lines, including DC Office Road, Sarina Road, Balal Road, and Jail Road, has been fully covered under the campaign.

He added that plantations have also been carried out along the RB Canal near Shahina, the D-Ground belt and adjoining localities, as well as Jinnah Town. Petunia was selected due to its compatibility with local soil and climatic conditions.

Kibria noted that the seasonal flowers not only enhance the visual appeal of urban spaces but also contribute to a cleaner and healthier environment for residents.

In parallel, the PHA has initiated a tree plantation drive, targeting the planting of around 10,000 shade-giving trees, including Tabootia, Bottle Brush, Neem, and Baken. So far, about 200 trees have been planted along city edge roads, with the remaining to be planted over the next two months.

Officials said the trees, measuring between eight to ten feet in height, are being planted six feet apart to support sustainable growth and long-term urban greenery.

The initiative has received appreciation from citizens, who say it has improved the city’s outlook while promoting environmental awareness. Many residents have been visiting different areas to enjoy the vibrant floral displays and greenery.

Kibria said the project reflects Faisalabad’s growing focus on environmental sustainability and public welfare, highlighting a shift towards creating cleaner and more liveable urban spaces.
