SYDNEY: Former Australia opener and Karachi Kings captain David Warner has been charged with drink-driving after being stopped in Sydney over the weekend.

The 39-year-old, who continues to play Twenty20 cricket in franchise leagues around the world, was allegedly driving a van that came to a stop and parked short of a random testing site on Sunday.

Australia’s national broadcaster ABC reported that police officers approached the vehicle and carried out a breath test on Warner, which allegedly returned a positive result. He was then arrested and taken to a local police station, where he was charged with mid-range drink driving, ABC and other local media outlets reported.

Warner is scheduled to appear in court on May 7.

Police issued a statement describing the incident, but did not identify Warner by name.

Recent PSL appearance

Warner most recently featured for Karachi Kings last week in the ongoing Pakistan Super League. The former Australian batter is currently leading the franchise in this year’s competition.

Karachi Kings are the only side with a perfect record in the PSL so far this season.

Warner’s international career

Warner retired from international cricket in 2024 after scoring 8,786 runs in 112 Test matches for Australia.

Even after stepping away from the international game, he has remained active in franchise T20 cricket across different leagues.

The reports on Tuesday marked the latest development involving the veteran cricketer, who remains one of Australia’s most recognisable former players and is currently involved in the PSL with Karachi Kings.

ABC and other local media said the matter relates to an incident on Sunday in Sydney and that Warner will face court proceedings next month.
