US, Israel strike kills senior IRGC Naval Commander as conflict intensifies

WASHINGTON: The United States has confirmed the killing of a senior Iranian military figure in a major escalation of ongoing hostilities with Iran, marking one of the most significant developments in the conflict so far.

US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth announced that Alireza Tangsiri, the top naval commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed during an overnight airstrike carried out by the Israel Defense Forces. The operation is part of a broader US-Israeli military campaign targeting Iranian infrastructure and leadership.

Speaking during a cabinet meeting alongside President Donald Trump at the White House, Hegseth described the strike as a decisive moment in the campaign.

“This is a major blow to the IRGC navy,” Hegseth said, adding that Iran has effectively lost its naval command structure.

Widespread Military Damage Claimed

According to US officials, the scale of destruction inflicted on Iranian military assets has been extensive. Hegseth stated that more than 150 Iranian naval vessels have been destroyed since operations began on February 28. Additionally, over 10,000 targets—including underground installations and key defense facilities—have reportedly been hit in less than a month.

He further claimed that US and Israeli aircraft, including A-10 Thunderbolt II planes and AH-64 Apache helicopters, are now operating freely over Iranian territory—an indication, he said, that Iran’s air defenses have been neutralized.

“The presence of these aircraft is proof that Iran’s air defenses are gone, their command and control is shattered,” Hegseth said, adding that senior Iranian leaders are now believed to be operating from underground bunkers.

Iranian Military Under Pressure

US officials assert that the rapid pace of strikes has significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities and morale. Hegseth described Iran’s armed forces as “heavily degraded,” claiming that mid-level commanders are being systematically targeted.

“Twenty-seven days ago, Iran had a modern military,” he said. “Never in recorded history has a nation’s military been so quickly and effectively neutralized.”

The comments suggest that Washington sees the campaign as both strategically successful and ongoing, with no immediate indication of de-escalation.

Regional and Global Concerns

While US officials portray the operation as a decisive success, the broader implications remain uncertain. The killing of a high-ranking IRGC commander is likely to escalate tensions further, raising concerns about potential retaliation from Iran and the risk of a wider regional conflict.
