Elon Musk announces Tesla’s AI chip manufacturing project to begin in seven days

San Francisco: Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced on Saturday that the company’s large-scale artificial intelligence (AI) chip manufacturing initiative, known as the Terafab project, is set to launch within the next seven days.

Musk had previously indicated that Tesla would likely need to construct a “gigantic chip fab” to support its AI ambitions. The company is currently developing its fifth-generation AI chip, which is designed to power Tesla’s autonomous driving technologies, including its Full Self-Driving software.

At Tesla’s annual meeting last year, Musk outlined potential manufacturing strategies for the new chip. He mentioned the possibility of collaborating with Intel, stating, “You know, maybe we’ll, we’ll do something with Intel.” He added, “We haven’t signed any deal, but it’s probably worth having discussions with Intel.”

Musk has also previously highlighted that Tesla is working with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and South Korea’s Samsung on AI chip production. These partnerships are aimed at advancing the hardware that supports Tesla’s autonomous vehicle systems.

Despite the announcement, Tesla did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for further details regarding the Terafab project. Musk has previously discussed the AI5 chip and emphasized the importance of expanding chip manufacturing capabilities to meet the growing demands of Tesla’s AI-driven technologies.

The AI chips developed by Tesla are a critical component of the company’s self-driving systems, which Musk has positioned as central to Tesla’s future growth and innovation in the electric vehicle market.
