Ministry declines to absorb Pak-PWD staff despite PM's directive

ISLAMABAD: The Ministry of Housing and Works has refused to integrate redundant employees of the Pakistan Public Works Department (Pak-PWD) into its workforce, disregarding a directive issued by the Prime Minister, according to an official report.

The Prime Minister had earlier instructed the Ministry to absorb Pak-PWD staff who were rendered redundant following recent restructuring efforts. However, the Ministry has not complied with this instruction, leaving the affected employees in a state of uncertainty regarding their future employment status.

The issue arose after the government initiated reforms within Pak-PWD, resulting in a number of staff positions being declared surplus. In response to concerns over potential job losses, the Prime Minister directed the Ministry of Housing and Works to accommodate these employees within its various departments. Despite this, the Ministry has reportedly refused to implement the directive, citing undisclosed reasons.

The refusal has drawn criticism from stakeholders who argue that the Ministry's stance undermines the government's commitment to safeguarding the livelihoods of public sector workers affected by administrative changes. The affected employees have expressed apprehension about their job security and have called for immediate intervention to resolve the matter.

As per the official report, the situation remains unresolved, with no indication from the Ministry regarding any alternative plans for the surplus Pak-PWD staff. The lack of action has heightened concerns among the employees and their families, who are seeking clarity on their employment prospects.

The development highlights ongoing challenges in the implementation of government directives related to civil service reforms and the absorption of surplus staff within federal ministries.
