Stakeholders urge government to promote Gwadar Port amid regional shipping disruptions

KARACHI: In light of disruptions to regional shipping routes caused by the ongoing conflict in Iran, stakeholders have called on the government to capitalize on the strategic advantages offered by Gwadar Port. This recommendation was made during a meeting held on March 6, which brought together representatives from shipping lines operating in Pakistan, officials from port authorities, the Pakistan National Shipping Corporation (PNSC), the National Logistics Corporation (NLC), and was chaired by the director general of the Ports and Shipping Wing.

Participants at the meeting unanimously agreed on the need for the strategic utilization of Gwadar Port. They highlighted that Gwadar is currently one of the most peaceful and strategically located ports in the region, making it an attractive option for international shipping lines facing disruptions elsewhere.

The stakeholders emphasized that the available capacity and facilities at Gwadar Port should be actively marketed to international shipping lines. They also recommended that the government focus on improving the competitiveness and cost rationalisation at other ports, as well as enhancing operational efficiency and reducing turnaround time for vessels and cargo.

One of the key suggestions from the meeting was to initiate ship-to-ship operations for oil cargo at Gwadar Port. This measure is expected to enhance petroleum transhipment capabilities, further positioning Gwadar as a viable alternative for regional and international shipping activities affected by the Iran conflict.

The meeting concluded with a consensus that immediate steps should be taken to promote Gwadar Port's strategic location and operational advantages, particularly as regional shipping routes continue to face uncertainty due to the ongoing situation in Iran.
