KHYBER: The district administration has announced the commencement of registration for internally displaced persons (IDPs) belonging to the Akkakhel tribe from Tirah valley, starting today (Monday). This initiative follows rising apprehensions among the Akkakhel community regarding the worsening security situation in their area, which borders Orakzai district.
The announcement was made on Sunday by the district administration through a statement issued from Khyber House. The move comes after the Akkakhel Qaumi Council convened a meeting on March 3, during which they expressed serious concerns about the presence of armed militant groups in their locality. The council urged security officials and the district administration to either take decisive action against these groups or facilitate the immediate evacuation of residents who feel threatened by the ongoing situation.
During the meeting, the Akkakhel Qaumi Council also called upon the relevant authorities to grant them official IDP status. They requested that all facilities and support previously extended to other tribes displaced from Tirah valley be provided to them as well. The council emphasized the need for protection and assistance, citing the growing risks posed by the militant groups assembled in their region.
According to the district administration, a registration centre has been established to facilitate the process for those seeking displacement status. The administration stated that the registration aims to ensure that affected families receive the necessary support and services during this period of insecurity.
The situation in Tirah valley has led to heightened anxiety among local residents, with community leaders repeatedly voicing their concerns to authorities. The district administration's latest move is seen as a response to these appeals, aiming to address the immediate needs of the Akkakhel tribe as security challenges persist in the area.
