Preservation efforts resume at 18th-century Kalhora tombs in Garhi Yasin

LARKANA: The Sindh culture department has restarted preservation work at Thaheeman Ja Quba, a historic graveyard located in Garhi Yasin taluka of Shikarpur district, where four tombs from the Kalhora dynasty stand. The site, situated approximately 30 kilometers north of Shikarpur along the Indus Highway, has suffered significant deterioration over the years due to official neglect, adverse weather conditions, and damage by various individuals.

According to Naveed Sangah, a young architect supervising the current restoration efforts, the Thaheeman Ja Quba—also known as Bohi Quba—is a vital heritage site that reflects the history, sacrifices, and architectural traditions of the Thaheem tribe during the Kalhora period. Sangah noted, "The Thaheem tribe was known for its bravery and resistance during the Kalhora dynasty." He added that oral traditions and historical accounts indicate that the Thaheems fought against the Kalhora rulers, and the tombs serve as a testament to their legacy.

Over the past several decades, multiple government initiatives aimed at preserving these monuments have failed for various reasons. Despite these setbacks, the culture department has recently renewed its commitment to safeguarding the site. The ongoing work seeks to address the structural damage and restore the tombs, which are considered significant both for their historical value and unique architectural features.

The preservation of Thaheeman Ja Quba is seen as an important step in protecting Sindh's cultural heritage and ensuring that the stories and contributions of the Thaheem tribe during the Kalhora era are not lost to time.
