PESHAWAR: Chief Minister Mohammad Sohail Afridi on Sunday unveiled a fuel subsidy initiative for registered motorcycle riders throughout Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, following the recent hike in petroleum prices by the federal government.
Addressing a press conference at the Chief Minister’s House, Afridi stated that the provincial government is introducing this subsidy to help low and middle income households cope with the financial strain caused by the latest increase in fuel prices. He emphasized, “The subsidy is intended to shield low and middle income households from the financial burden created by the latest increase in fuel prices.”
According to an official statement, the chief minister also mentioned that a relief package for farmers is being planned ahead of the wheat harvest season. Afridi made it clear that the provincial government does not support any policy or decision that adds to the difficulties of people who are already facing economic challenges. He rejected the recent increase in petroleum product prices, stating, “We believe that the increase will have an impact on around 100 million people, who have been living below the poverty line.”
Detailing the subsidy, Afridi announced that registered motorcyclists would receive a total of Rs2,200, with Rs1,100 to be disbursed immediately and the remaining Rs1,100 to be provided at a later stage. He explained that the provincial government would bear the additional cost resulting from the fuel price hike for these individuals.
The chief minister’s announcement comes amid growing concerns about the impact of rising fuel prices on daily commuters and economically vulnerable groups in the province. The initiative is part of the government’s broader efforts to provide targeted relief to those most affected by inflation and rising living costs.
