Sindh launches Rs2,000 petrol subsidy for registered motorcycle owners

KARACHI: The Sindh government has announced a relief measure for motorcycle owners, offering a petrol subsidy of Rs2,000 for each registered bike.

The initiative was introduced after a sharp increase in fuel prices across the country. Petrol rose to Rs458.41 per litre, while high-speed diesel climbed to Rs520.35. The increase has added to the burden on daily commuters and pushed up transport costs nationwide.

Speaking at a press conference, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah said motorcyclists were among the groups hit hardest by the rise in fuel prices. He linked the increase in global oil prices to the US-Israel war on Iran.

The chief minister said Sindh has around 6.7 million registered motorcycles, underlining the scale of the programme and the number of people who could benefit from the subsidy.

Relief measure for bikers

The provincial government presented the subsidy as a targeted step aimed at easing pressure on motorcycle users in Sindh. With millions of registered bikes in the province, the measure is expected to cover a large segment of commuters who rely on motorcycles for daily travel.

Murad Ali Shah said the government had put in place a registration and verification process to make sure the subsidy reaches eligible motorcycle owners in time. He outlined the procedure during his media briefing.

Under the announcement, the subsidy applies to registered motorcycles. Owners will need to complete the required registration and verification steps in order to receive the payment.

Fuel price surge cited as reason

The announcement comes amid a broader rise in fuel costs in Pakistan. The latest increase in petrol and diesel prices has affected transport expenses and household budgets, particularly for people who depend on motorcycles for routine commuting.

During the press conference, the chief minister described bikers as one of the most affected groups in the current situation. He said the provincial government’s decision was intended to provide some immediate relief in response to the higher fuel prices.

Bikers as one of the most affected groups amid soaring global fuel prices caused by the US-Israel war on Iran.

The chief minister explained the steps for registration and verification at the briefing, saying these were necessary for the timely disbursement of the petrol subsidy.

The Sindh government’s announcement marks a major relief initiative focused specifically on motorcycle owners, with Rs2,000 to be provided per registered bike.
