SUEZ: Pakistan men's national field hockey team sealed qualification for the FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 after edging past Japan men's national field hockey team 4–3 in a gripping semi-final of the qualifiers at the Suez Canal Authority Hockey Stadium on Friday.
The victory ended Pakistan’s wait to return to the global showpiece since the FIH Hockey World Cup 2022, with the former champions producing a dramatic late comeback to seal their spot.
Pakistan started strongly as captain Ammad Butt opened the scoring in the ninth minute with a superb field goal, giving the Green Shirts an early advantage that lasted through the first quarter.
Japan levelled the match in the 21st minute when Ryoma Ooka struck a field goal to restore parity.
Momentum then shifted in Japan’s favour in the third quarter as Shota Yamada and Koji Yamasaki scored in quick succession to give their side a commanding 3–1 lead.
However, Pakistan produced a stunning turnaround in the final quarter. Abu Mahmood ignited the comeback in the 52nd minute before Sufyan Khan equalised three minutes later. Moments later, Afraz struck in the 57th minute to complete the dramatic comeback and put Pakistan ahead.
Japan pushed hard in the closing minutes, but Pakistan’s defence held firm to secure a memorable victory.
The win marked Pakistan’s fourth consecutive triumph in the ongoing FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 Qualifiers, after the team finished the group stage unbeaten.
Pakistan began their campaign with a narrow 5–4 victory over China men's national field hockey team, followed by a 5–3 win against Malaysia men's national field hockey team and a 4–2 triumph over Austria men's national field hockey team.
Pakistan will now face England men's national field hockey team in the final of the qualifying tournament at the same venue on Saturday.
