KMC Revives Long-Dormant Incineration Plant in Karachi

The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has restored its incineration plant in the Gutter Bagheecha area of Mewa Shah, Keamari district, after years of inactivity. The facility, originally installed in 1998, had remained non-operational for an extended period before undergoing recent repairs and rehabilitation.

On Tuesday, Mayor Barrister Murtaza Wahab formally inaugurated the revived plant. He was joined by KMC Council Deputy Parliamentary Leader Dil Muhammad, Jaman Darwan, UC Chairman Ali Raza Rind, and other elected representatives during the inspection of the site.

According to officials, the incineration plant is now capable of disposing of up to 10 tonnes of industrial and medical waste daily. The mayor described the restoration as a significant achievement for the city, emphasizing its importance in addressing the growing challenge of hazardous waste management as Karachi's population and industrial activity continue to expand.

Reports indicate that concerns have been raised in the past regarding improper disposal of industrial and medical waste, including used syringes and blood, which were sometimes dumped into local drains. The operationalization of the incinerator is expected to help mitigate such issues by providing a dedicated facility for safe waste disposal.

Officials present at the event expressed hope that the revived plant would contribute to a cleaner and safer Karachi. The mayor highlighted the project as a step towards achieving a "clean and green Karachi," underscoring the administration's commitment to improved waste management practices in the city.
