Sindh Bar Council seeks removal of Governor Tessori over 'political use' of Governor House

KARACHI: The Sindh Bar Council has demanded the immediate removal of Sindh Governor Kamran Tessori, declaring his alleged involvement in political activities at the Governor House a violation of the Constitution.

The demand was made through a resolution passed during the council’s 109th meeting held on February 21. The resolution stated that the governor’s participation in political activities and the use of the Governor House for such purposes were unconstitutional.

“The House demands immediate removal of the Governor Sindh as he has proved himself unfit for representing the federation,” the resolution read, urging President Asif Ali Zardari to take action without delay.

The council stressed that constitutional offices must remain above partisan politics and that the governor, as a representative of the federation, must maintain impartiality. It further asserted that no compromise would be accepted on the unity and integrity of Sindh.

Calling on the Pakistan Peoples Party Parliamentarians (PPPP) to clarify its stance, the council asked the party to publicly state its position regarding power-sharing arrangements in the federal government with political forces that have allegedly promoted narratives about the division of Sindh.

“The people of Sindh deserve clarity and assurance that the province’s unity and constitutional status will not be compromised under any political arrangement,” the statement added, noting that even absent members of the council had endorsed the resolution.

The controversy follows criticism by Sindhi nationalist leaders over a recent event at the Governor House attended by leaders of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement–Pakistan (MQM-P). Ayaz Latif Palijo, head of the Qaumi Awami Tehreek, accused Tessori of turning the Governor House into a platform for ethnic politics, alleging that it had become a “centre for hatching conspiracies against Sindh and Pakistan.”

A day later, Sindh Senior Minister and Information Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon also criticised what he termed hateful and linguistically biased speeches delivered at the ceremony. He said such references, including remarks about state institutions, were inappropriate for a constitutional platform and harmful to civic harmony.

Sharjeel expressed concern that elected representatives were using official forums to promote divisive narratives, warning that such developments could undermine Karachi’s culture of peace and brotherhood.
