PTI Announces ‘Imran Khan Release Force’ to Lead Street Campaign for Ex-Premier’s Freedom

ISLAMABAD: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Wednesday announced the formation of the “Imran Khan Release Force” to spearhead a campaign aimed at securing the release of jailed former prime minister Imran Khan.
The 73-year-old cricketer-turned-politician has been incarcerated since August 2023 after being convicted in multiple cases, which he maintains were politically motivated following his ouster through a parliamentary vote of no confidence in 2022.
The announcement comes amid renewed concern within the party over Khan’s health. A medical report submitted to the Supreme Court of Pakistan recently indicated that he has only 15 per cent vision remaining in his right eye. The government, however, insists that the former premier is receiving the best possible medical care.
Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi told reporters earlier that PTI leaders and Khan’s personal doctors were satisfied with the treatment being provided, accusing his sister Aleema Khan of politicising the matter.
Speaking at a press conference outside the apex court, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Sohail Afridi — a close aide of the PTI founder — said he had been tasked with leading a “street movement” for Khan’s release. He alleged that court orders were being ignored and claimed that the former prime minister was still being denied access to his personal physicians.
Afridi said the “Imran Khan Release Force” would be formally registered and would pursue a peaceful struggle. Members of the force would take an oath in Peshawar immediately after Eid ul Fitr, he added.
The provincial chief executive said the force would operate under a clear chain of command, with leadership roles to be decided by Khan himself. He emphasised that preparations would be finalised before launching any protest campaign.
According to Afridi, the movement would focus on upholding the supremacy of the Constitution, strengthening democracy and ensuring media independence.
