China, EU reach ‘soft landing’ in EV dispute as dialogue continues

BEIJING: China has expressed readiness to continue dialogue with the European Union (EU) to promote an open and stable market environment for industrial development on both sides, the Ministry of Commerce said on Thursday.

Speaking at a regular press conference, ministry spokesperson He Yadong responded to a media query regarding the European Commission’s decision to exempt tariffs on a China-made Volkswagen SUV. The vehicle will now be imported under a minimum price and quota arrangement.

He said that following multiple rounds of negotiations, China and the EU had reached an agreement within the framework of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, achieving what he described as a “soft landing” in the electric vehicle (EV) case.

According to He, the agreement has been widely welcomed by industries and stakeholders in both China and the EU, as well as by the broader international community.

Under the deal, both sides support Chinese EV manufacturers in adopting price undertakings. The EU has issued a guiding document after the negotiations and committed to an impartial and non-discriminatory evaluation process, he added.

Emphasising the deep integration and mutually beneficial nature of China-EU automotive ties, the spokesperson expressed hope that the EU would implement the key consensus reached during recent leadership-level meetings and fully follow through on the negotiated outcomes.

He also said China looks forward to more Chinese companies reaching price undertaking agreements with the EU.
