UAE tightens rules for remote working visa in 2026

DUBAI: The United Arab Emirates has opened applications for its Remote Working Visa, allowing foreign professionals to live in the country while working for employers based overseas. The visa is issued for one year and can be renewed as long as applicants continue to meet the eligibility criteria.

One of the key features of the programme is that it does not require a local sponsor or employment with a UAE-based company. Applicants must be employed by an organisation outside the UAE and provide evidence of an active work arrangement.

A major change has been introduced for 2026. From January 27, applicants are now required to submit bank statements covering the last six months instead of three. This change effectively raises the minimum employment duration to six months, as salary deposits are used to assess income stability.

Applicants must meet the minimum salary threshold set by UAE authorities and provide proof of consistent earnings through bank statements. They are also required to hold valid UAE health insurance and submit an official letter from their employer confirming approval for remote work from within the UAE.

Applications can be submitted online from inside or outside the country. In Abu Dhabi, accredited typing centres are also authorised to process applications. The government fee is approximately $81, excluding medical examination and Emirates ID charges, with processing usually taking five to seven working days.

Holders of the Remote Working Visa are allowed to sponsor residence permits for immediate family members, including spouses, children and parents, subject to standard residency regulations.

The initiative allows professionals to work legally in the UAE without entering the local job market, while contributing to the economy through long-term residence and local spending. It builds on Dubai’s Virtual Working Program launched in 2020 and aligns with similar schemes adopted by countries such as Estonia, Barbados and Cyprus.

Authorities have cautioned that working remotely without the appropriate visa may result in fines, tax issues or immigration penalties. With updated requirements now in force, prospective applicants are advised to prepare their documentation early if they plan to take advantage of the Remote Working Visa in 2026.
