Azlan Shah’s second marriage prank triggers backlash across social media

KARACHI: YouTuber and influencer Azlan Shah, widely known for the symbolic donkey gift he presented at his wedding, landed in hot water after posting a dramatic announcement claiming he was “getting married again.” The post, shared through his Instagram story, hinted at a major revelation he felt compelled to share before rumours spread.

The statement confused many followers and immediately stirred reactions. Some assumed he was joking, others took the announcement at face value, and a few responded with angry messages.

Hours later, Azlan released a video with his wife, Dr Vareesha Javed Khan, explaining that the post was merely a prank. He acknowledged that people had accused him of lying and even cursed him after seeing the initial announcement. He then clarified that he was indeed “marrying again,” but only in the sense of renewing his vows with Vareesha for their anniversary.

Sitting beside him, Vareesha criticised the way he framed the prank, calling it a terrible approach. Azlan repeatedly apologised, telling her he was sorry and that he loved her. She added that she would never even let him think about a real second marriage, prompting yet another apology from him.

The online audience, however, didn’t find the prank amusing. Many called it tone-deaf and unnecessary. One user complained that such “second marriage jokes” keep harmful norms alive. Another said they loved the couple but thought the idea was a complete misfire. Several questioned whether attention and engagement had become more important to him than ethics or sensitivity.

Others were more blunt, accusing Azlan of craving cheap attention and calling the stunt a shallow attempt to boost views. Some jokingly advised him to turn off his comments before the backlash grew worse.

Although Azlan attempted to keep the video lighthearted, social media users were not willing to let the matter go so easily, especially given how sensitive and overused second-marriage humour has become.

Azlan and Vareesha, who married in 2022 and share a two-year-old daughter, are known for their playful online content. This time, however, the joke clearly missed the mark.
