BAKU/ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday held a bilateral meeting with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev at the Presidential Palace in Baku, flanked by Chief of the Army Staff, Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, , underscoring the strategic weight of the engagement.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif thanked President Aliyev for inviting him to attend Azerbaijan’s Victory Day celebrations, which commemorate the country’s historic triumph in the 44-day Karabakh Liberation War against Armenia, according to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

The prime minister arrived in Baku earlier in the day for a two-day official visit at the invitation of President Aliyev, during which he will participate in Azerbaijan’s Victory Day ceremony. Victory Day marks the country’s “historic victory in the 44-day-long Karabakh Liberation War against Armenia”, the PMO noted.

PM Shehbaz, accompanied by Information Minister Attaullah Tarar, was received at Heydar Aliyev International Airport by Azerbaijan’s First Deputy Prime Minister Yagub Eyyubov, First Deputy Foreign Minister Fariz Razayev, Pakistani Ambassador Qasim Mohiuddin and members of the diplomatic staff.

According to the PMO, the prime minister thanked President Aliyev for inviting him to attend the Victory Day celebrations and congratulated the Azerbaijani leadership and people. He added that Azerbaijan’s victory “served as a beacon of hope for oppressed people striving for self-determination, including the people of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir and Palestine”.

The meeting saw both leaders reviewing the “whole range of bilateral relations” and reaffirming their commitment to strengthening multilayered cooperation in political ties, trade and investment, energy, regional connectivity and defence.

PM Shehbaz also extended a formal invitation to President Aliyev to visit Pakistan, which the Azerbaijani leader “graciously accepted”, the statement said.

The prime minister appreciated President Aliyev for concluding the landmark peace agreement with Armenia earlier this year. The Azerbaijani president, in return, thanked Pakistan for its consistent and principled support during the struggle against the illegal occupation of the Karabagh region and lauded Islamabad’s efforts to promote stability in South Asia.

Earlier in the day, the Foreign Office (FO) confirmed that PM Shehbaz was undertaking the visit to participate in events marking the fifth anniversary of Victory Day. The FO said the discussions between the two leaders would focus on “reviewing the entire gamut of bilateral relations and identifying new avenues to further deepen cooperation in diverse sectors, including trade and investment, energy, defence, education, and regional connectivity”.

The FO emphasised that Pakistan and Azerbaijan enjoy “long-standing fraternal relations, rooted in shared faith, history, culture and mutual trust.” It added that the visit would reaffirm Pakistan’s unwavering support for Azerbaijan’s sovereignty and territorial integrity while advancing the strategic partnership between the two nations.

PM Shehbaz previously visited Azerbaijan in May this year as part of a four-nation diplomatic tour, during which both sides reiterated their intent to expand cooperation across mutually beneficial sectors. In August, President Aliyev called the prime minister to convey his appreciation for Pakistan’s consistent support on the Nagorno-Karabakh issue.
