ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday said Pakistan was keen to deepen cooperation with Iran—particularly in economic development, bilateral trade and regional stability—as both neighbours continued to stand together on issues of peace, diplomacy, and resistance to state-sponsored terrorism.

He made the remarks during a meeting with Speaker of the Iranian Parliament Dr. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who called on him at the PM House along with a delegation.

Welcoming the visiting dignitaries, the prime minister reaffirmed Pakistan’s “cordial and historic” ties with the brotherly Muslim nation and reiterated the two countries’ firm commitment to resolving global disputes through peaceful dialogue and diplomacy. He also conveyed profound respect for His Eminence Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pazeshkian.

The prime minister underscored that both Pakistan and Iran had been victims of terrorism and therefore shared a strong resolve for global peace, prosperity, and constructive regional engagement. He stressed that the two countries had consistently condemned state-sponsored terrorism and supported each other against unilateral aggression targeting their sovereignty. “Pakistan and Iran are determined to work in cohesion and cooperation for the unity of the Muslim Ummah,” he said.

Dr. Ghalibaf expressed deep gratitude to Pakistan for its “valued and well-placed” support during the recent Iran-Israel conflict, saying the solidarity shown by the Pakistani government and people throughout the 12-day war was warmly acknowledged in Tehran. He emphasized that both nations believed in the unity of the Muslim Ummah and in advancing the message of global peace.

The Iranian speaker also appreciated the strong parliamentary cooperation between the two states and extended special thanks to Speaker of the National Assembly Sardar Ayaz Sadiq for his role in fostering institutional ties. Reaffirming Iran’s commitment to advancing economic and trade cooperation with Pakistan, he also conveyed warm sentiments from President Masoud Pazeshkian.

The meeting was attended by Speaker Ayaz Sadiq and Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs Syed Tariq Fatemi. Pakistan and Iran, which already share close ties and have signed multiple agreements in sectors such as energy and trade, reiterated their eagerness to further expand cooperation in all mutually beneficial areas.

PM thanks expatriates as remittances surpass $3.4b

Separately, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed gratitude to overseas Pakistanis after foreign remittances surged past $3.4 billion in October—an 11.9% increase. The prime minister said the continued rise in inflows reflected the diaspora’s trust in the government’s policies.

“Overseas Pakistanis are our invaluable assets, serving the nation and country by sending their hard-earned money,” he remarked.
