Rawalpindi to get five new traffic-relieving flyovers and underpasses

RAWALPINDI: In a bid to address the severe traffic congestion in Rawalpindi, the Punjab government has initiated an ambitious infrastructure project that includes the construction of five new flyovers and underpasses. This major development will target key areas such as Katchery Chowk, Jinnah Park (Annexy Chowk) on Airport Road, and Iftikhar Janjua Chowk on G.T. Road.

The Provincial Development Working Party (PDWP) has given the green light to these projects, which collectively carry an estimated cost of over Rs. 13.33 billion. The Frontier Works Organization (FWO) has been entrusted with the execution of the projects, with initial work already underway, including piling tests near Fatima Jinnah Women University and the district courts. The projects aim to ease traffic for the approximately 482,000 vehicles that use Rawalpindi’s roads daily.

The focal point of the initiative is the Katchery Chowk project, which currently handles around 200,000 vehicles per day. The Rs. 5.97 billion plan includes a 1,394-foot underpass to facilitate Saddar-bound traffic from Jinnah Park, along with a four-lane divided flyover. In addition, 2.97 kilometers of slip roads will be rehabilitated, with land acquisition totaling 24.2 kanals for this section.

The Jinnah Park project will involve a 1,263-foot underpass for traffic heading to Mushtaq Baig Shaheed Road, along with a 1,509-foot flyover toward Airport Road. Over 2.22 kilometers of at-grade road will be upgraded, and 5.95 kanals of land will be acquired for this purpose.

At Iftikhar Janjua Chowk, which sees about 146,000 vehicles daily, a 1,165-foot underpass and 1.56 kilometers of at-grade road rehabilitation are planned. This section will require the acquisition of 4.28 kanals of land.

According to Executive Engineer Rana Qamar Ali, Rs. 1.5 billion has already been allocated for land acquisition around Katchery Chowk. Once completed, these projects are expected to dramatically improve Rawalpindi’s traffic flow, enhancing connectivity and reducing the daily gridlocks that have plagued the city for years.
