ISLAMABAD: A rare lenticular cloud formation appeared over Quetta early on Tuesday, captivating onlookers with its wavy, space-like shapes and colorful hues resembling a rainbow.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the unusual cloud formation was observed over Koh e Murdaar, located in the eastern range of the city. The spectacle occurred before sunrise, lasted for approximately 20 minutes, and dissipated just as the sun began to rise.
The phenomenon, known as a lenticular cloud, is a type of contrail cloud created by the rotation of planes, though some on social media initially speculated that aircraft activity caused the display.
PMD spokesperson Anjum Nazir Zaighum explained that lenticular clouds form when stable and humid winds pass through the clouds, creating waves in the atmosphere. He further noted that such formations typically occur at the foggy tops of hills, quickly disappearing as vapor once the winds settle.
