Rains bring relief and cool breeze to Punjab, disrupt power in parts of Lahore

LAHORE: Several parts of Punjab received overnight rain on Saturday, turning the weather chilly and pleasant while also exposing weaknesses in the region’s electricity distribution system.

Light to moderate showers, accompanied by strong winds and thunder, were reported in Lahore, Muridke, Sangla Hill, Khushab, Chiniot, Toba Tek Singh, Sheikhupura, Kamalia, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mianwali, Hafizabad, and Sargodha.

In Lahore, the rain brought a sharp drop in temperature but also led to power outages across multiple localities. The gusty winds uprooted trees in several areas, further disrupting electricity supply.

According to the Meteorological Department, more rainfall is expected today in Islamabad, Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, and Gilgit-Baltistan, with a possibility of hailstorms in some areas.

Low-lying areas in Lahore were inundated, prompting the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA) to launch late-night drainage operations to clear blocked manholes and ensure water flow. Despite temporary disruption, residents welcomed the rain as a sign of the approaching winter.

Experts said the cooler weather and lower humidity levels could help curb rising cases of flu, fever, and dengue, while improving overall air quality across the region.
