ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Monday welcomed the Award issued by the Court of Arbitration regarding the General Interpretation of the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT), according to a statement from the Foreign Ministry.
The Award, which was announced on August 8 and published on the court’s website on Monday, addresses the criteria for new run-of-river hydropower projects that India intends to construct on the Western Rivers – Chenab, Jhelum, and Indus.
The Foreign Office spokesperson stated that the ruling is a clear endorsement of Pakistan’s longstanding position on these issues. It also came in the context of India’s recent decision to suspend the IWT and its previous decision to boycott the Court of Arbitration proceedings.
“Pakistan remains committed to fully implementing the Indus Waters Treaty. We also expect India to immediately resume the normal functioning of the Treaty and adhere to the Award announced by the Court of Arbitration,” the spokesperson added.
